Why You Don’t Feel Good (Hint: It’s not the weather)

Let’s face it, sometimes winter can make us feel a little lousy. It could be the short days, inclement weather, or cold and flu season. All this combined can make us feel sluggish, tired, or unfocused on a regular basis.

With summer just around the corner and a few warm days already under our belt, we might find ourselves thinking, why don’t I feel better yet? (Hint: We can’t blame the weather anymore!)

Here are some things that can help you feel your best:

Hit the gym or the trail. When you’re already exhausted from a long day at work, it might seem counterintuitive that exercise would give you energy – but it does! Much of our energy comes from the mitochondria in our cells, and exercise increases their ability to produce energy. So even after a workout is finished the body will continue to have more energy.

Make sure you’re eating right. Eating a well-balanced breakfast will jump-start your metabolism and give you energy for the day. Avoiding simple carbohydrates will help avoid weight gain, that sluggish feeling, and the “sugar crash”. Try incorporating foods that have a variety of vitamins and minerals into your meals and see if that changes how you feel.

Drink plenty of water. Remember that being tired and light-headed are symptoms of dehydration. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Keep filling up that water bottle throughout the day.

Get a couple extra hours of sleep tonight. The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep each night for the average adult. Not getting enough sleep can cause lack of alertness, decreased memory, and increased stress. Plus, no one feels energized when they’re sleep-deprived!

Manage your stress. When the body is under chronic stress, the presence of cortisol and adrenaline can upset the healthy hormonal balance. This can lead to a decreased immune system, weight gain, increased aches and pains, sleep issues, upset stomach, and loss of focus. Try meditating, yoga, or going for a walk around the neighborhood. Taking your mind off of whatever is causing you stress (even if it’s just for a little) will vastly improve how you feel.
